Nichelle Nichols: Space Advocate [StarTalk Radio Interview]

Nichelle Nichols, who played Chief Communications Officer Lt. Uhura on the original Star Trek series, has always been interested in space travel: she has flown aboard the Kuiper Airborn Observatory, viewed the Viking 1 landing on Mars as a special guest at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and along with fellow Star Trek cast members, attended the roll-out of Enterprise, the first Space Shuttle orbiter.

In the late 1970’s, Ms. Nichols joined forces with NASA to recruit women and minorities as new astronaut candidates, including Dr. Sally Ride and Dr. Judith Resnik. Regarding her recruitment efforts, Dr. Ride told Ms. Nichols “If it hadn’t been for you I might not be here.”

In this StarTalk Radio program, Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson talks with Ms. Nichols about her recruitment work for NASA [audio].
