Total Geek Meltdown! Thor is Now the ‘Goddess’ of Thunder

Geekdom is losing its collective head over Marvel’s Thor’s sex change. Do we want more female superheroes? Of course, but not at the expense of the already established male superheroes we love.

We want original female superheroes with their own history and unique identities. This is what other geeks are saying about Thor’s sex change:

“Changing Thor into a woman won’t garner your desired female audience; it will CHASE all of the women out of the theater.”

“It’s taken me a few days to figure out why this bothers me so much—aside from my crush on Chris Hemsworth. This new “Thor” is not worthy of the hammer. She’s an identity thief. I’d love to see a kick ass woman able to use the hammer until Thor is worthy again, but she needs to keep her own identity.”

“Why not a new female hero instead of recycling and altering an existing hero?”

“Ok I’m all for Marvel promoting female superhero’s a bit more, But this is the stupidest thing i have ever heard, Unlike other hero’s like captain america, iron man etc Thor isn’t a persona, he is Thor, he cant become unworthy of his name. Yes they can possess the power of Thor but they cant be Thor.”

“This is not a smart move! A brand new female superhero would be nice Thor is a known male character…he is of comic legend and you are going to slap some boobs on and say look female comic lovers this is for you …not!”

Update: Marvel Comics Writers Explain Why They’re Making Thor a Woman

Here are some highlights from Time’s interview with Thor’s writers and editors.

Alex Alonso, Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief, says:

There are a number of women in Thor’s life, and we’re going to tease out for quite awhile the identity of who this woman is. But one of the women in Thor’s life picks up the hammer. She is in fact worthy. And she becomes Thor.

Jason Aaron, writer of the ‘Thor’ series:

Beta Ray Bill was a horse-faced alien guy who picked up the hammer. At one point Thor was a frog. So I think if we can accept Thor as a frog and a horse-faced alien, we should be able to accept a woman being able to pick up that hammer and wield it for a while, which surprisingly we’ve never really seen before.

And Will Moss, Marvel Comics editor of the upcoming ‘Thor’ series, says:

The male Thor—he’s still going to be around. He’s still a character.
